How Much Does a Funeral Cost in Chiang Mai?

What actually affects the price — and why we don't publish a fixed price list.

It's one of the first questions families ask — often before they've thought about anything else — and it's a fair question. But the honest answer is that funeral costs in Chiang Mai vary widely, because they depend on the choices a family makes, not on a single fixed rate. Here is what actually drives the cost, so you know what to expect and what to ask about.

The casket

Caskets range from simple to elaborate, and the material and finish you choose is usually the largest single line item in a funeral.

How many days the ceremony runs

Traditional Thai funeral rites are often held over multiple days rather than one, with monks chanting each evening, guests visiting, and catering repeated for each day. A one-day service and a three-day service can differ enormously in total cost, simply because of how many times catering, flowers, and venue costs repeat.

Flowers and decoration

This can be as modest or as elaborate as a family wishes, from a simple wreath to a full floral display.

Catering

Thai custom often includes feeding guests who come to pay respects, sometimes across multiple days. The scale of this is one of the more flexible costs in a funeral, and one families can decide deliberately.

Cremation or burial

Cremation is the norm in Thailand and is generally the more straightforward option. Burial is less common and, at most commercial cemeteries, considerably more involved — though more accessible local options exist, such as the Chiang Mai Foreign Cemetery, which offers modest plots specifically for foreign residents.

Repatriation, if remains are being sent abroad

This is its own separate undertaking, with different documentation, a different timeline, and different considerations from a local service. We've written a full guide on what foreigners need to know about a death in Thailand if this applies to your family.

Why we don't publish a price list

Every family's wishes are different, and a fair estimate depends on understanding what's actually needed for your situation — the number of days, the type of service, the number of guests. Publishing a single figure would either overstate a simple service or understate an elaborate one. What we can promise is a clear, itemized, written estimate before anything is arranged, with nothing added later that wasn't agreed to first.

Planning ahead changes this

One of the most valuable things pre-planning does is let a family make these decisions calmly, with time to think, rather than deciding everything at once during grief. Read about pre-planning →
